Siemens AG in Duisburg/Germany successfully utilizes m+p international’s Coda data acquisition units for continuous data acquisition, data processing and real-time monitoring at their turbo compressor test facility. Recently, Siemens ordered a mobile data acquisition unit for on-site turbo compressor testing. This mobile Coda system will support 96 channels to measure temperatures, pressures, flows and strains. It consists of a 19” housing, a VXIbus mainframe and the signal conditioning units. Operation is done via an external laptop which will be connected via CAT-5 and fiber optics cables.
The stationary Coda data acquisition units which have been used at Siemens for some time now acquire and verify not only the performance data and thermodynamical parameters but also the vibration data of the turbo compressors. Several compressors are tested in parallel for acceptance tests. A single stationary data acquisition unit acquires up to 168 process signals and 48 vibration signals.

2. How to Understand and Reduce Fan Vibration
m+p’s SO Analyzer was used to investigate the dynamic reEsponse of a fan system which exhibited high levels of vibration as it swept up to its normal operating speed. The resulting fatigue was significantly compromising reliability and although a number of solutions had been suggested it was not clear which would offer the most cost effective solution.
The fan was instrumented with a tachometer which provided a pulse every revolution. This signal was captured to trigger acquisition and enables the vibration amplitudes to be measured from accelerometers and plotted against frequency and RPM.
The detailed Application Note “Fan Housing Vibration” discusses how, from this initial measurement, order tracks and Operating Deflection Shape analysis were used to diagnose the root cause and understand the structural effects of the vibration and then how other tools within SO Analyzer were used to develop and implement a very simple solution reducing vibration levels by nearly 30%.
