30 June 2011

Welcome to our latest Newsletter about the Vibration & Environmental test world in addition to the latest information from m+p international.

The m+p international Newsletter is circulated exclusively to test engineers and managers involved in vibration test, data acquisition and signal analysis and hopes to bring you some useful technical snippets gleaned from around the world and from around the test and measurement industry. We always look forward to your inputs, send us your views to newsletter@mpihome.com.

In this Issue:

  1. Noise & Vibration Analysis: Release of SO Analyzer Rev. 4.1
    (Available End of July)
  2. Volkswagen: High-Frequency Test Stand for Vehicle Acoustics
  3. After-Sales Services Available from m+p international

1. Noise & Vibration Analysis: Release of SO Analyzer Rev. 4.1

m+p international’s SO Analyzer is a dynamic data acquisition, analysis and reporting system with integrated analysis across a wide range of applications from structural testing to sound quality.

SO Analyzer Revision 4.1 will introduce a lot of new useful capabilities and enhancements to our software, a few of them are:

  • Normal Mode Tuning (ground vibration testing): For the demanding modal test requirements of the aircraft and space industries m+p international have implemented „normal mode tuning“. This method ensures the most accurate estimate of the normal mode frequency and related damping values and is not limited by FFT resolution issues. The real-time user interface shows progress towards the optimum normal mode frequency indicated by the MIF display and real-time mode shape analysis. This is augmented with Nyquist and Bode plots as the final high-resolution stepped sine sweep is completed.
  • Mode Shape Validation Wizard with Circle Fit Editor: This method is the ideal complement to normal mode tuning. In conjunction with the interactive mode shape animation it is perfectly suited for checking and optimizing each FRF measurement
(e.g. FE validation for flight clearance). SO Analyzer’s modern interactive multi-display implementation of this traditional technique makes it quick and easy to review and validate data across even high channel counts.
  • The Sound Power wizard covers all functions available in the ISO 374x sound power standards in a simple to use setup page. Background noise corrections are optional.
  • Tonality: The ECMA 74 standard provides a method of characterizing the audible significance of tones within a sound pressure measurement and is a useful addition to the new sound power capability.
  • SO Analyzer now supports the following National Instruments cards: NI PXI-4220 (strain), NI 9217 (temperature), NI PXIe-6358, NI 9201, NI 9205, NI 9206, NI 9225.
  • The measurement initialisation has been restructured to improve measurement speed.
  • Additional computation functions have been implemented: FRF H1, H2 and Hv, normalized cross-correlation, normalized probability density, 1/x in chart calculator and integral in value table, m+p’s VibControl Averaged/Mean/Peak filters mimicked in sine reduction.
  • Acoustic Time History Functions offer higher resolution down to < 1 ms increments for transient noise events.
  • SO Analyzer Rev. 4.1 supports Windows 7 x86 and x64.

SO Analyzer Rev. 4.1 will be available from end of July 2011.

This update is of course free to all our customers with current maintenance contracts.

For more information, please read our 4-page SO Analyzer Rev. 4.1 Update Note
or email us at sales.na@mpihome.com.

2. Volkswagen: High-Frequency Test Stand for Vehicle Acoustics

High-frequency noise impacts the acoustic comfort impression of a vehicle significantly.
m+p international developed a vibration test stand for Volkswagen in Wolfsburg/Germany
to investigate the transmission behaviour of unit bearings in a frequency range up to
2,000 Hz. The electrodynamic shaker is suspended in the welded test stand frame where it is vibration isolated. The m+p VibControl system is used for vibration control, data acquisition and analysis in automatic test operation. Volkswagen awarded m+p international a contract to plan and realize the complete vibration test stand.

3. After-Sales Services Available from m+p international

Did you know that m+p international have a full range of after-sales services available to users of our software and systems?

To receive priority applications support and to keep your systems fully up to date with the latest software features you can subscribe to our software support contract. This also provides loan equipment so should your hardware develop a fault and need to be sent away for repair you are able to continue testing.

Calibration of your m+p systems is available on-site to provide you with minimal down time or if you have time then a return to service centre option is available. As is very common within the industry an annual calibration is recommended to check that all is well with your systems and they are within manufacturers tolerances. We can also arrange for your accelerometers to be calibrated to National standards.

Do you have a shaker and require annual shaker servicing? This can be arranged as part of an overall single package including calibration and support and this can also include emergency breakdown call out cover.

And finally to keep up to date – did you know that you can download the latest
m+p international's brochures, application notes and other product information by visiting http://www.mpihome.com/english/pdf_e.htm.

For a support, calibration or shaker servicing quotation or for more information on these services or any of our products please call us on +1 973 239 3005 or
email sales.na@mpihome.com.

Well, that brings to a close this edition of the m+p international Newsletter. If there are items of info you would like to see here or if you have useful tips for the rest of the environmental test world, then please send us your pointers and we'll include them in the next edition.

Please forward this Newsletter to your colleagues if you have found it of interest, spread the word...
